The rich exist for the sake of the poor. The poor exist for the salvation of the rich. ~St. John Chrysostom
A few weeks ago I shared a story about my friend Lawrence. Lawrence has lived on the streets for 8 years. He was changed by God's grace and though Lawrence still fights the monster of addiction he was currently clean when we talked. He wants to be a street preacher he said, not one who preaches on the street corner, but one who reaches others in his same situation with the Grace he's received.
Last week BK's bag was stolen. I've never seen BK angry but he was raging mad! His blanket was in the bag and it had turned cold quick. When I returned with him a new blanket he told me that Lawrence had given him one of his. I was amazed at this sacrifice!
Last night BK came down to where we were serving coffee with Lazarus that Land of a Thousand Hills had donated because I had a new duffle bag for him to replace his stolen one. My mom scouts out the local thrift stores and picks them up whenever she finds them. Over a cup of coffee BK shared with us that he has an interview tomorrow at 2:00 at CNN!!! He boasted that this job would pay him $14/hr allowing him to get off the streets. When I asked him how he managed to score that kind of interview his response was again-Lawrence. Lawrence helped BK get signed up for a 5 month program through a local church that will provide shelter, clean clothes for an interview, resume' support, food and job networking. He was so excited to share with us that he'd no longer be sleeping on the streets and that in fact he was on his way to completely turning his life around. "I'll have snazzy, clean clothes and my hair braided. . ." he talked of the first changes he'd make. I was beaming with pride, joy and hope. BK went on to say "No one chose this life for me. I chose to be out here-it came one bad choice at a time and it will come around one good choice at a time."
