That is what David said when I introduced myself. I went to the DMV to check on something and as I pulled into the parking spot I ran over David's coat. He was washing the car next to me. I apologized for not seeing his coat and introduced myself. It just so happens that I went to get my car washed yesterday and they were closing as I pulled in. I asked them if they had time for one more but the declined. Now David and I are both glad they didn't have the time for me. He says "If the Lord knows the hairs on your head and the grains of sand on the beach, do you not think he knows your next move also?" It didn't take very long for me to get things straightened out in the DMV office so I had ample time for conversation with my new friend as he made my car sparkle. He shared that he stayed in a car garage a couple of blocks away. It doesn't have electricity or heat but the man lets him stay there in exchange for doing odds and ends around the house. "I have a place I can lock my doors and say my prayers. I am content." David shared of his home. I asked him how he made money during the winter because washing cars had to be difficult when it's so cold you can't feel your fingers. "I pick up fliers for the local tourist spots and take people around." "So you're a tour guide?" "Yeah, I guess you could call me that."
One story told me was of a guy who asked him if he'd clean his car, David replied "Yes, of course." The guy said "For free?" David responded "Sometimes you have to give a blessing to receive a blessing. If you don't want to give me anything, I'll clean it anyway. And I'll clean it just as well as if you were paying me." So he proceeded to work hard at making this guys car shine. "I wanted him to see that I think everyone should be treated with respect and dignity even if they do not treat me the same way in return. That's what Jesus did when they mocked him." As he finished up the guys car, someone in the car next to him blew his horn. It scared David because he'd not noticed someone was sitting in that car. He walked over to the window, the man handed David a $20 bill and said "This is for cleaning that car." "I was so shocked!" David said, "I took that $20 bill over to the guy whose car I'd just cleaned and showed him. I said 'See, I told you, sometimes you have to give a blessing to receive a blessing. That man just paid me for cleaning your car.'" "I think God wanted to teach that boy a lesson. I am glad he used me to teach it to him. " He thanked me for treating him with dignity and respect. "Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect." he added again. I shared with him my thoughts about where you live doesn't define who you are. He agreed saying that he found his identity in Christ, "He's the only One who can tell me who I am."
